Kerry Ann Rockquemore
Kerry Ann Rockquemore, who received her doctorate in from the University of Notre Dame in 1999, will deliver the address at the University鈥檚 at 10 a.m. May 17 (Saturday) in the Compton Family Ice Arena.
While a graduate student, Rockquemore won both the John J. Kane Memorial Award for the most outstanding graduate student in sociology and the for the most outstanding student in the social sciences. She entered academia and went on to earn tenure at the University of Illinois-Chicago, where she held appointments in sociology and African American 91视频. Her research interests are in multiracial children and the politics of racial categorization.
After earning tenure, Rockquemore鈥檚 interests shifted to creating supportive communities for pre-tenure faculty, particularly in regard to writing productivity and work-life balance. She wrote 鈥淭he Black Academic鈥檚 Guide to Winning Tenure Without Losing your Soul鈥 and then founded the (NCFDD), which offers on-campus workshops, professional development training and intensive mentoring programs to graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and faculty members. The NCFDD currently has 24 institutional members, including Notre Dame, Stanford and the University of California at Berkeley. It has drawn great praise from college leaders and workshop participants, many of whom have described the workshops as 鈥渢ransformative.鈥
Rockquemore is the author of 鈥淏eyond Black: Biracial Identity in America鈥 with David Brunsma and 鈥淩aising Biracial Children鈥 with Tracey Laszloffy, 15 refereed journal articles, 11 book chapters and numerous columns for . In 2005, she received the Exemplary Mentoring Award from the at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and in 2009, the A. Wade Smith Award for Teaching, Mentorship and Service from the Association of Black Sociologists.
Rockquemore will receive the Distinguished Alumna Award at the Graduate 91视频 Awards Dinner on May 16. Her address will be the centerpiece of the Graduate 91视频 Commencement ceremony the next day, when the University will honor its master鈥檚 and doctoral degree recipients.
