ND to commemorate Martin Luther King with discussion, prayer and service

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, on Jan. 19 (Monday) will be celebrated at the University of Notre Dame with events before, on and after the date itself.

Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., Notre Dame鈥檚 emeritus president, will speak of his friendship with Rev. King and his own experiences in the civil rights movement, in a discussion Thursday (Jan. 15) at 7 p.m. in the Annenberg Auditorium of Notre Dame鈥檚 Snite Museum of Art.The discussion,鈥淲itness to a Movement,鈥漺ill include the story behind the famous photograph, now exhibited in the Smithsonian Institution, of Father Hesburgh and Rev. King with their arms linked during a 1964 civil rights rally in Chicago鈥檚 Soldier Field.

Joining Father Hesburgh in the discussion will be Richard Pierce, Notre Dame鈥檚 John Cardinal O鈥橦ara, C.S.C., Associate Professor of History and chair of Africana 91视频,and Dina Harris, director of foundation relations at Indiana University South Bend.The event, sponsored by Notre Dame鈥檚 Office of Multicultural Students and Programs, is free and open to the public.

Notre Dame鈥檚 president, Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., will host and preside at a prayer service honoring Rev. King鈥檚 legacy Jan. 19 (Monday) at 11 a.m. in the rotunda of Notre Dame鈥檚 Main Building.Joining Father Jenkins will be Rev. Hugh Page, dean of Notre Dame鈥檚 First Year of 91视频, members of the University鈥檚 Celebration Choir and other Notre Dame students.A reception will follow.

Notre Dame鈥檚 student government will sponsor a"Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service"on Jan. 25 (Sunday), when student volunteers will gather for a campus breakfast followed by a day of various community service projects in the South Bend area.
