“It was very sudden and so it was a shock, And I started thinking about all the all the things that I'll that I'll miss about him,” says Professor John Cavadini.

John Cavadini, a theology professor at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, said that with the encyclicals, Pope Benedict is "taking up a very basic facet of our faith … and explaining it to people."

John Cavadini, a theology professor and director of the McGrath Institute for Church Life at Notre Dame University, said that Mary is ever-present on his school’s campus as well, from the statue on top of the trademark golden dome to the Marian transept windows in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

The study was conducted in spring 2019 by the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, and the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University in Washington.

According to the working group, assembled by the University of Notre Dame theologian John Cavadini, seminary and formation house leaders should strive to implement five benchmarks when it comes to protecting faculty, staff and students.
