Groody’s 91ÊÓƵ

Groody in the News

Amid the scenic papal gardens outside Rome in early March, the Vatican and the University of Notre Dame launched a new global sustainability initiative to apply Catholic principles to addressing climate change and other ecological threats facing the planet. Holy Cross Fr. Robert Dowd, president of the Catholic university in Indiana, said in a statement that the alliance left its inaugural meeting "with a renewed sense of purpose and hope" and that its efforts reflect "the deep connections between environmental sustainability and human dignity and flourishing." A central figure was Holy Cross Fr. Daniel Groody, vice president and associate provost for undergraduate education at the University of Notre Dame. They were later joined by Arun Agrawal, a renowned scholar of environmental politics and sustainability who in January 2025 became the founding director of Notre Dame's Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative, which leads the university's efforts around food, energy, water and infrastructure.

Named among 11 new dicastery members the Holy See announced March 30 are: Holy Cross Father Daniel Groody, deputy principal and associate principal for university education of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana; Meghan J. Clark, assistant chair of the Department of Theology and Religious 91ÊÓƵ of St. John’s University in New York; Dylan Corbett, executive director of the Hope Border Institute in El Paso, Texas; and Léocadie Lushombo, professor of theological ethics at the Jesuit 91ÊÓƵ of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, California.

The University of Notre Dame and the Vatican announced on Monday that Pope Leo XIV has appointed Rev. Daniel Groody, C.S.C., the vice president and associate provost for undergraduate education and professor of theology and global affairs, as a member of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.

Among the 11 new members are Holy Cross Fr. Daniel Groody, vice president and an associate provost for undergraduate education at the University of Notre Dame ... For Groody, the appointment signals continuity with longstanding efforts to link theology and global concerns. A professor at the University of Notre Dame, Groody has written extensively on migration and refugee issues and has worked with policymakers and international bodies.

The Holy Father also appointed to the dicastery Father Daniel Gerard Groody, CSC, vice president and associate provost for undergraduate education at the University of Notre Dame; Meghan J. Clark, assistant chair of theology and religious studies at St. John’s University; and Léocadie Wabo Lushombo, IT, of the Jesuit 91ÊÓƵ of Theology of Santa Clara University. ...Father Groody, known for his “theology of migration,” told EWTN News in a statement: “In light of the pressing global challenges facing the world and the cry of the poor and vulnerable, I am humbled and honored by this appointment and hope to contribute everything I have to help make the invisible love of God more visible to the world.”

These thoughts and the current battle over immigration brought me to the work of the Reverend Dan Groody, a Catholic priest and a professor of theology at Notre Dame, who spent years working in Latin America.

The vestments were hand-delivered to the pope by the Rev. Daniel Groody, vice president and associate provost for undergraduate education at the University of Notre Dame, who attended the Mass. Groody said Notre Dame plans to launch a pilot class in integral ecology for its students at the Borgo Laudato Si’ in March, with the hopes of expanding the course to other universities in the future.
